Morning Morning by Tuli Kupferberg
by Steven McCabe
Morning morning
Feel so lonesome in the morning
Morning morning
Morning brings me grief
Sunshine and the sunshine
Sunshine laughs upon my face
& the glory of the growing
Puts me in my rotting place
Evening evening
Feel so lonesome in the evening
Evening evening
Evening brings me grief
Moon shine moon shine
Moon shine drugs the hills with grace
& the secret of the shining
Seeks to break my simple face
Nighttime nighttime
Kills the blood upon my cheek
Nighttime nighttime
Does not bring me to relief
Starshine and the starshine
Feel so loving in the starshine
Starshine starshine
Darling kiss me as I weep

I make no claim whatsoever to these lyrics, whose copyright, I assume, remains with the author & Fugs founding member, the late Tuli Kupferberg. I simply wish to share these beautiful words & music.

You always give such interesting and satisfying scrolling / sliding experiences Steven. Here the silent stillness of your drawing holds its center while around it discs and spheres skim across the surface like pebbles across water, curling rocks across ice, pool balls across green velvet, glass marbles across a schoolyard. They keep the movement from becoming too immobilized by melancholy. I followed the link to Morning, Morning. Such beautiful sadness. I didn’t know The Fugs before so thank you for new music to explore.
And on the subject of new ideas some time ago you asked if I knew John Moriarty. I didn’t. I have been watching and bathing in his talks and readings on YouTube ever since, so thank you for that very special connection also.
Thank you John for your thoughts on the circular shapes and their effects on the image and your new (3D) ways to view the circular shapes…ways they are being as... good thoughts. Isn’t it such a beautiful song…I must have listened to it 500 times making this post…(wild exaggeration). Thanks for bringing up John Moriarty…something you had once said reminded me of him…& at that point I had just learned about him…and then forgot! Now you’ve reminded me of him again and I’ve been listening anew! So double thanks!
I imagine the band would appreciate how you’ve illustrated the words to this song … the ‘trophy’ head on the wall, the drooping wing hair thoughts, the warrior bird creature still singing away, the scratches on the background round and round. Walls….
You’ve done it again…called up relevance with the Fugs. Throwing themselves out there. That ‘head space’ Steven…. art with relevance.
Side note…being featured in an 8 millimeter film that I heard later traveled around college campuses. The Fugs were the background music. I was naively engaging in my first ‘alternative’ experience.
Thanks Steven…really!
Thank you for your impressionistic and meaningful interpretations of the visuals Jana, the emphasis on ‘walls’ gives me pause, and your thoughts on relevance. That’s quite fascinating that you were in an 8 mm film with Fugs music in the background enjoying an, … Ah, an ‘alternative’ experience… I suspect I relate to (such a remembered) head space. Many thanks.
Chimeric intensity- your drawing.
Thanks Jack, love that word ‘Chimeric.’ I think I’ll spend some time today with it. Good directional thought!
Absolutely gorgeous visual representation, Steven. I love your line.
Thank you Richard. I think it was done using a drawing tablet. I love line drawing, ink & paper or otherwise.
