Vincent in the Sky Above Bologna, 1493
by Steven McCabe
A star hung in the sky just above
The brim of his straw hat.
He gazed upon a city.
I hope nobody mistakes me, he thought.
He gazed upon a medieval woodcut
On Christmas Eve.
I used Google Earth
To track the movements of the past,
Finding where the sky began…
I had to do this
Before unplugging
For a few days…
To contemplate what I might awaken
Soon, &
2015,
So soon upon us…
& In this season of celebration,
A star alighting upon Vincent,
Wishing you
A Happy New Year.
The woodcut, depicting Bologna, is by an unknown artist, 1493.
Self-portrait by Vincent Van Gogh, 1887.
Bologna street scene from Google Earth, 2014.

Beautiful. Vincent always was, always will be. What child are you bringing into the world this Christmas, Steven? A new Vincent in the manger? xx
hi Nel, thank you. A new Vincent in the manger would certainly be a wonderful thing! :- )
As always, wonderful pictures and poem. I have to catch up with many of your recent blogs, always a pleasure, but just wanted to return the greetings and wish you a happy and peaceful Christmas too. Ending the year with Vincent is perfect.
I hope you had a wonderful Christmas mn. Is it too late to say Happy New Year? thank you for these thoughts.
Happy new year, Steven!
Happy New Year Richard!
Beautiful juxtaposition of Vincent and woodcut. I look forward to your 2015 posts.
Thank you mrsdaffodile. Somehow Vincent and the woodcuts worked. I have another series with the same woodcuts (though not Vincent) for some point down the road. I look forward to your 2015 posts also.
